I’ve always wanted to get into RC helicopters but I couldn’t ever afford the big guys. I played with some of the micro helis before but they were always pretty junky and mostly uncontrollable. Most of them simply spinning in a circle.
One day at work a buddy of mine brought in his Syma S107G and my impressions and expectations of these little helicopters was changed forever.
These things are way cool and actually fun to play with. The new breed has a gyro inside to stabilize it during flight. You can literally throttle these up and they’ll just sit in one spot and hover. Best of all I got mine for less than $25 shipped from Amazon. Unlike the overpriced junk I had before that I got from the toy store, this one actually has a mechanical trim adjustment. For me this means I don’t spend the first frustrating moments of flight trying to get it to stop spinning.
I can get about 6 minutes of flight out of it. It takes about 25 minutes to charge. It takes about 5 minutes after the battery is dead for the cat to stop crying about me taking it away.
The experience has been good enough to me that it’s re-sparked my interest in RC stuff. I’m going to start a project to restore a Traxxas Rustler that I have soon. I’m also contemplating building a boat but we’ll see how that goes. Anyway if you’re interested I highly recommend checking one of these out, it’s a lot of fun for little investment.
